It has been developed in the area of public finance, highlighting its participation in budgetary, financial and debt issues, responded the Social Communication office of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), at the request of information from the press.

Positions of Victoria Rodríguez Ceja

Rodríguez Ceja has held different positions in the public administration, among which the following stand out: Undersecretary of Expenditures in the Federal Ministry of Finance, which is the position she has held since the beginning of the current federal administration until today.

During her tenure as Undersecretary of Expenditures, she was in charge of directing and controlling the planning in terms of programming and budgeting of the agencies and entities of the federal public administration.

If ratified, Rodríguez Ceja would be the first woman from Mexico to govern Banco de México.

He was also part of the team of the former Secretary of the Treasury, Carlos Urzúa 20 years ago, when Andrés Manuel López Obrador was head of government of the then Federal District.

In the official page of the Treasury there is no description of the profile, and the information provided by the Office of Communication of the Treasury in the morning does not specify dates.

Key moment

The appointment of Rodríguez Ceja must be sent by the Chief Executive to Congress for ratification. The current term of the governorship of the Bank of Mexico, headed by Alejandro Díaz de León, ends on December 31, so the official would enter the new position on January 1 of next year.

The objective of this autonomous body of the federal government is to maintain low and stable inflation, through different functions, such as establishing an interest rate that serves as a reference for financial institutions.

Rodríguez will arrive in Banxico in a context of high inflation worldwide due to the stoppage of activities to reduce the contagion of coronavirus. Meanwhile, this morning Inegi reported that inflation in Mexico reported its highest rise in 20 years, during the first half of November.

“Today or tomorrow, we will see, we will send the appointment, we want women to participate, for this change to take place, recognizing the work that the Undersecretary of Expenditures has done, who has been acting very well, with an exemplary performance”, said the president, López Obrador.

She “is in charge of the management of public investments and has acted with great responsibility not to spend, to spend, it is due to her that we have financial stability, that additional debt has not been resorted to, she is a very good public servant, for the first time, a woman will be heading the Bank of Mexico ”, commented the president.

General support

According to the firm Emant Consultores, the appointment of Victoria Rodríguez confirms that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador opts for the most conditional profiles for the second half of his term.

If ratified by the Senate, the Banco de México Governing Board will be made up of a majority of women (three out of five members) and will be joined by Deputy Governors Irene Espinosa Cantellano and Galia Borja Gómez.

The consultant does not foresee any major problem for the Senate to give the green light to his appointment despite the criticisms made by experts regarding his failure to comply with the requirements established by the Banxico Law.
