Alicia Scherson, filmmaker: “The stripes of Chile Vamos are crafted from an advertising agency and there you have the Briones backhoe”

This Friday the stripes for the elections on November 21 begin. On television, the space for the candidates will be two blocks of 20 minutes each, alternating between presidential and parliamentary.

In the case of the parliamentary electoral strip, it is made up of six pacts and five parties, plus independent candidates. On this occasion, the parliamentary fringe of the Democratic Revolution party (DR) is led by the filmmaker Alicia Scherson.

Scherson’s work has been recognized nationally and internationally. His first feature film “Play” (2005) won more than 15 international awards. In 2013 he premiered at the Sundance Film Festival his third film “El Futuro” based on the book “Una novelita lumpen” by Roberto Bolaño. He also wrote the script for “Rara” (2016) with Pepa San Martín. He is also a teacher of the Fiction Workshop in the Film and Television career at the University of Chile.

Although the filmmaker works essentially in fiction, she already has experience in politics since she contributed in the strip of the Approval for the Plebiscite of October 25, 2020 where the drafting of a New Constitution was decided.

The metaphor of the forest

Now, in charge of the DR strip, the director and scriptwriter together with the team she leads are betting on the concept of the native forest due to its diversity and collaboration, also following the line around the tree that Gabriel Boric presented in the primary strip presidential.

“The axis of DR is diversity, collaboration and working together, DR is always ‘more independent’, so it opens the doors to civil society, to the territories and I think that is the axis, always thinking about the collaboration, working together and together ”, he expressed.

On this occasion, Scherson exclusively leads the RD parliamentary strip, while the television bet on Gabriel Boric’s candidacy is being produced by publicist Pablo Paredes.

“I am a friend of Pablo Paredes, we have worked together and I feel that there are many common lines, for example from Gabriel’s tree the forest emerges thinking of the parliamentarians. A tree is not enough, you have to have a forest and that is what we are building ”, he commented.

Culture workers on the fringe

The strip team is made up of various audiovisual industry workers, such as María Paz González, director of “Lina de Lima” (2019), Alejandro Pérez director of “Piola” (2020), Nayra Ilic director of “Metro Cuadrado” (2010), Ignacio Juric and Che Sandoval, which gives the proposal a different thickness.

“In general, there are many more people linked to culture and cinema surrounding this project with which we identify and it shows. The stripes of Chile Vamos, its resources, are usually only advertisers and there you have the Briones backhoe as an example of a piece crafted from an advertising agency. And when you involve the filmmakers, things are different, without putting a value judgment on it, “he said.

The director also reported that working for a strip is different from what she is used to in relation to the fiction format. “Audiovisually it is a very different exercise, especially because of the short duration and because you have to go straight to the point and in the movies I derive more. But I think in the DR they are super open to being more creative and more playful with the fringe. So, this freedom allows me a bit to play with the image with the scripts without being so literal, “he concluded.
