Havana, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, congratulated on the occasion of his 63rd birthday the Hero of the Republic Antonio Guerrero, one of the five Cuban anti-terrorists who served unjust imprisonment in United States prisons .
The president congratulated through his Twitter account who he considered a ‘brother’, and that precisely the day before his birthday, the same day that 68 years ago the historical leader, Fidel Castro, pronounced his plea of self-defense known as La History Will Absolve Me.
‘With the Marti spirit that accompanied Fidel, 68 years ago today, in his plea History will absolve me, I have turned 63 on this day, ready to give all my energy for the Revolution,’ Guerrero wrote through his profile in the social network on the occasion of his birthday.
The hero also received congratulations from Gerardo Hernández, national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, and who accompanied him along with René González, Ramón Labañino and Fernando González in the unjust execution of the jail.
Recognized worldwide as the ‘Five’, the Cubans were detained in the United States while monitoring the movements of terrorist organizations that planned pirate attacks, sabotage actions and attacks against the Antillean island.
The anti-terrorist fighters were arrested and subjected to a judicial process plagued with irregularities, in which they were found guilty, despite the fact that the only crime truly proven was the use of false identities (three of them).
For more than 16 years they remained in North American prisons and suffered humiliations such as isolation in punishment cells for no reason and deprivation of communication with their families.
Their resistance and courage sparked a solidarity movement of international scope to demand their release, which was completed on December 17, 2014 as a result of negotiations between the two countries, with the return to the island of Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Rodríguez and Ramón Labañino. Fernando González and René González had returned previously, after serving their sentences.
In Cuba the ‘Five’ received the status of Heroes of the Republic and the Playa Girón Order, in addition to the recognition of the population.
