Face-to-face teaching activities at all educational levels will have resumed in the next month, according to the Ministry of Education (Mined) reported on Wednesday.

Before, according to the calendar for the resumption of the school year 2020–2021, on October 4, the students of 12mo. Grade, third and fourth years of pedagogical training schools and those of third year of Professional Technical Education (ETP) had resumed face-to-face teaching activities.

Dr. Ena Elsa Velázquez Cobiella, Minister of Education, in exchange with the press, assured that sixth grade primary school students; seventh, eighth and ninth, of basic and special secondary; tenth and eleventh of pre-university; first and second years of the ETP; and first and second years of pedagogical training would resume face-to-face activities on November 8, which would last until March 5. Following the same schedule, early childhood, which includes preschool, and first through fifth grade, primary and special, are scheduled to return to classrooms on November 15.

In this regard, the Minister stressed that the student who was not vaccinated is not prevented from attending the center, because there is less risk, and stressed that the family decides whether the student is vaccinated or not. The measures have been taken and the protocols are established jointly with Public Health, added Velázquez Cobiella, referring to the way to act in case of presenting a case of COVID-19 in schools.

Cuba has an enrollment of 1,687,421 students in general education, distributed in 10,754 educational institutions. Among teachers and non-teachers, the country currently has 407,552 workers in the sector.

The 2019-2020 academic year stopped, in person, on March 24, 2020 to make way for television teaching activities, which began six days later. All of this was possible, said Velázquez Cobiella, because the country has a well-structured system, which includes the Central Institute of Pedagogical Sciences, the Cinesoft company and the Educational Channel, just to mention some of its strengths.

He recalled that in the conception for the development of the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 courses, the preservation of the health of students and teachers is a priority. He specified that it is a premise to resume face-to-face teaching activities in each territory, in correspondence with the completion of the vaccination scheme and the hygienic-sanitary conditions.

To date, more than 84,500 students from the terminal years of upper secondary education have been incorporated into the classrooms, and there are strategies to prepare students for admission to Higher Education.

At the conclusion of the press conference, the Minister of Education recognized the important role played by the Cuban family in the comprehensive education of their children during the pandemic.
